It’s a common frustration. You’ve got the load ready, the strap in hand, and the S-hook won’t fit your anchor point. Whether it’s a thick trailer rail, oversized tie-down bar, or awkward mounting point, this mismatch can stop a job in its tracks.
The good news? You don’t need to force it, modify hardware, or risk unsafe setups. There are simple, reliable ways to work around it while keeping your load secure.
1. Use Loop Straps (Soft Anchors)
Loop straps, also known as soft anchors, are one of the most versatile solutions available.

How they work:
- Wrap the loop strap around your anchor point
- Feed one end through the other to create a secure choke
- Hook your ratchet strap directly onto the loop
Why it works:
- No reliance on hook size
- Protects surfaces from metal-on-metal contact
- Creates a tight, load-rated anchor anywhere
Best for:
- Painted or delicate surfaces
- Oversized or irregular anchor points
- Anyone wanting maximum flexibility in setup
2. Loop the S-Hook Back Onto the Strap (Quick Fix)
If you’re stuck on-site without alternative gear, there’s a simple workaround using the strap itself.

How to do it:
- Wrap the webbing around the anchor point
- Bring the S-hook back and connect it onto the strap itself
- Tighten as normal with the ratchet
Why it works:
- The strap becomes the contact point around the anchor
- Eliminates the need for the hook to fit the rail
- Fast and effective in a pinch
Important:
Make sure the strap sits flat (no twists) and isn’t rubbing against sharp edges. This method is widely used, but proper positioning is key to maintaining strength and safety.
This is a temporary method. If you are consistently using this technique, we advise upgrading your ratchets to the Double J-Hooks with D-Ring as described below, for a more purpose-built connection.
3. Switch to Double J Hooks (Swan Hooks) with a D-Ring or Sewn-in Soft Loop
If your anchor points are consistently too large for standard S-hooks, upgrading your strap setup is the cleanest solution.

Displayed above are 3 types of Double J (swan) Hooks with differing D-Ring attachment style or Sewn-in Soft Loop.
Why it works:
- Double J (swan) hooks have a wider opening and deeper throat
- Easier to latch onto bulky rails, pipes, or ladder racks
- Paired with a D-ring, they give you a strong, adaptable connection point
Best for:
- Trailers with thick rails
- Commercial or trade setups
- Frequent heavy-duty use where speed and reliability matter
What You Shouldn’t Do
If the hook doesn’t fit, avoid forcing it or partially attaching it. An insecure connection can fail under load, putting your gear and safety at risk.
The right setup makes all the difference. A small adjustment in hardware or technique can turn a frustrating job into a smooth, secure tie-down every time.
